What is IGNOU MBA? Course Description

Distance Education MBA from IGNOU is the Master of Business Administration  programme offered by Indira Gandhi National Open University. Its mode of study is the Open Distance Learning method, in which candidates learn using the study materials provided and using the prescribed syllabus and write the exams of IGNOU. Class room presence is not required or is nil here. While the distance learning method has its own advantages, it has its fair share of disadvantages too, nevertheless it is becoming more and more popular in the recent times.

It  is approved by the AICTE and is recognised by the UGC. It is also approved by the Distance Education Council, which is the premier body for regulating distance education in India.

Types of MBA offered by IGNOU

IGNOU is provides a lot of options to the MBA aspirants by providing different specialization MBAs.

Course Structure

The MBA program primarily consists of 21 courses (or you can call them papers),  which include the compulsory papers, electives and the project (which is equivalent to 2 papers).

Course Duration

Minimum Duration: 2.5 years
Maximum Duration: 8 years

You can complete the course within the minimum duration of 2.5 years,  but you have the time upto 8 years to complete your MBA. This is where MBA from IGNOU truly becomes flexible, if you are working presently and do not have the time to do a regular MBA then this can be your option. You can complete it taking  your own time, may be  3 years or so. But it is advised that you complete the course within the minimum duration.

IGNOU MBA Fee Structure

The total course fee is Rs. 31,500 which is distributed for the 21 courses. This gives a fee of Rs.1500 per course.

How Learning/Studying is Done

Like other IGNOU programs, IGNOU MBA is also  offered through the Distance Learning / Correspondence scheme. Thanks to the advancements in the communication technologies, IGNOU uses a variety of modern technology aids like Audio Visual aidsInteractive Radio CounselingTV Broadcast (Gyan Darshan), Printed Material …etc. to deliver study materials to the students.

Counseling sessions for IGNOU distance learning are also held in the regional study centers on a schedule that is drawn beforehand and is held in the Weekends (Saturdays & Sundays).

Eligibility Criterion

  1. You should be a graduate holding  bachelors degree in any fields from a university recognised by IGNOU. Your marks for graduation should be a minimum of 50% if you belong to the general category. If you are of the reserved category then you need to have only 45% marks for graduation. You should also have at least 3 years experience after graduation in professional or managerial or supervisory roles.OR

    Your marks obtained in the professional degree course must be at least 50%.

  2.  You should Qualify in the OPENMAT Entrance examinations conducted by IGNOU.
  3. There is no age restriction for admission, so its never late for you to get an MBA from IGNOU.

IGNOU conducts OPENMAT entrance examinations for admission to various management programs including MBA offered by its School Of Management Studies (SOMS). OPENMAT exams are conducted twice every year usually in the months of February and August. The aim of the OPENMAT test is to check your :

In this section we will explain the step by step procedure on how to obtain the admission for doing distance MBA in IGNOU.

Step 1: Check if You are eligible or Not. The eligibility criterion are given here.

Step 2: Download or Get the prospectus for Management programmes of IGNOU from the official website 0r IGNOU regional centres.

Step 3: Fill in the Application form (Form 1) for OPENMAT exam, which is the entrance test for IGNOU MBA and various other management programmes. The Form 1 comes along with the prospectus.Send the filled in application form to the IGNOU Headquarters in such a way that it reaches there on or before the last date of submission of the application forms.

Step 4: Study, prepare and attend the OPENMAT Exams

Step 5. If you are qualified in the OPENMAT test, congratulations!  Now you can apply for admission to MBA course from IGNOU by using the Form 2 which came along with the prospectus. Send the filled application form for admission along with the required documents to the Regional Director of the region of IGNOU under which you are currently living.
